Dear Members and Friends,
It’s been a wet and windy month at FAWWA and we’ve been grateful for opportunities to hunker down inside with a group of fellow writers over a roaring fire or mulled wine.
We have been delighted to announce a new round of funding from DLGSCI and support from Fremantle Press for the Four Centres Emerging Writers Program. FAWWA will work once again alongside the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre, the Peter Cowan Writers’ Centre and WAPI to deliver a two year program of workshops and mentoring to a small group of writers. Applications for the FAWWA Emerging Writers Program close on Sunday night 15 August at midnight. For details please see the information elsewhere on the website.
Our regular writing groups continue through August and the two OOTA sessions on alternate Fridays have Shey Marque (Poetry) and Ashleigh Angus (Prose) at the helm. Come along and experience something of their writerly magic, both run a lovely workshop!
July’s Friday@Furphy’s saw us toasting Mel Hall’s debut novel from Fremantle Press, The Little Boat on Trusting Lane (Fremantle Press).
This month we are delighted to have Cindy Solonec (pictured) author of Debesa (Magabala Books) with us. Cindy is a Nyikina woman and her book, which is a reworking of her UWA PhD thesis, concerns the intergenerational experience of her family in the West Kimberley. She will speak on Friday 13 August at 6pm over mulled wine and canapes. Pay at the door. $10 / $5 members.
For those of you who entered the Stuart Hadow Short Story competition the winner will be announced on September 12 at the awards ceremony and an announcement will be made shortly afterwards on the website.
Stay warm and dry everyone and keep writing,
Karen Whittle-Herbert
